Update Motorola Droid 4 XT894 to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean via CM10.1 ROM
Motorola Droid 4 XT894 is the subject of today’s tutorial because there is a way to update it to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. The name of the custom firmware which is our accomplice is CM10.1.
While there is some work left to bring it out of its development stage, the CyanogenMod 10.1 can offer great features such as better Google Now, lock-screen widget, gesture typing and more.
Requirements
Here is what you must absolutely take care of before installing the Jelly Bean 4.2.2 update: grab the USB Drivers for it on your comp, use the factory unlocked model, create as many backups as you think are necessary, turn on USB debugging on the handset and charge the battery it has inside its body. It’s also better if your Droid 4 XT894 is already rooted and sporting a custom recovery image.
Important instructions
- For our first step you need to download two files. They are GApps package (you must choose the gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip archive, from here) and , respectively, on your laptop. Plug the phone to your laptop when the files are where they’re supposed to be.
- Now follow the instructions in step 2: copy paste the two files from the comp to the SD card root of the Droid 4 XT894, then unplug the handset from the laptop.
- Power the smartphone off.
- Restart the device into Recovery Mode, then generate a full NANDroid backup (you can use this guide, too) of it by opting for Backup&Restore and then choosing Backup when a second display appears.
- For step 5 you should return, once the backup is over, to the main recovery menu and choose Factory Reset/Wipe Data followed by Yes; a wiping process will start.
- When it’s over, step 6 will tell you to go back to the recovery menu and opt for Wipe Cache Partition.
- Step 7: opt for Wipe Dalvik Cache and afterwards choose the flashing from the memory card.
- When you’re done, step 8 will need you to opt for Choose zip from SD card, find the cm-10.1-20130324-NIGHTLY-maserati.zip file, then choose with with Power. Now confirm the installation and then wait for it to be over. In order to flash the GApps file, you have to repeat what you did until now, but instead of the previous file you need to select the Google Apps archive.
- Step 9 will require the following: return, once more, to the phone’s main recovery menu. When you’ve reached the destination, you need to opt for the system rebooting. After the Droid 4 XT894 restarts, your next task will be to enjoy your newly updated phone to the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

Look closely at the display of your smartphone for errors during the procedure. If you see something appearing as Status 7, you should get a Jelly Bean firmware before flashing the CM10.1 custom firmware. If, however, you came across a boot loop (or the phone freezes on Boot), then you will have to take care of the problem by performing a wipe cache partition, then a wipe dalvik cache operation several times before you actually reboot the device.
If you don’t like what the update has done to your Droid 4 XT894, you can simply go back to the old ROM that was on it before the upgrade. To do that, you have to boot the smartphone into recovery and opt for Backup&Restore; after you do that, a list containing the name of your phone will pop on the screen. Tap on it to choose it and the previous ROM will be restored soon.
