Update Galaxy S Epic 4G D700 to Jelly Bean 4.2.2 using BeanStalk custom ROM

Samsung Galaxy S Epic SPH-D700 (Sprint version) can work with two custom ROMs if you want to update it to Jelly Bean 4.2.2. We’ve showed you how to flash the update via AvatarROM Build 2.9b in our previous post. For this one we will employ BeanStalk Build 1.200. You will get boot animation that can be customized, improved stability and many other cool features.

Requirements

The latter will be available after you follow our steps. But for now we will turn to the following pre-requisites: create a backup using our dedicated tutorial, continue by performing a backup of the phone’s memory to a dedicated hard drive, turn on USB debugging, install USB drivers on your laptop (check if they’re the ones meant for your smartphone), charge the battery and use the handset which is already fully unlocked.

Important instructions

Step 1: download the and Google Apps (you must choose the file labelled gapps-jb-20130301-signed.zip). Now that the archives are on the laptop you use, plug the handset to it, then send them to the smartphone’s SD card root.
For step two you have to unplug the products from each other, then power the Epic 4G SPH-D700 off; boot it into Recovery Mode by pressing and at the same time holding Volume Down, Volume Up and Power. Stop with that when the display of the D700 commences to flash.
Step three will ask you to go for a Factory reset/Wipe data action; confirm it by tapping on Yes, then choose Wipe cache partition when you’re in the phone’s Recovery Menu.
Select Wipe dalvik cache. After having performed these tasks dealing with a wipe of the system, you should continue by opting for Install zip from SD card and for Choose zip from SD card.
For the fifth step you need to find and then choose the BeanStalk Build 1.200 archive (the file is labelled BeanStalk1.200-20130422-epicmtd.zip); the button to use for this selection is Power.
Step six will need you to confirm the flashing of the file, then to do what you did for steps four (from “opting for Install zip from SD card (…) to confirm the flashing of the file”), only be careful to opt for the Gapps while you’re at it.
Step seven goes like this: return, after the files have been installed, to the Recovery Menu of your smartphone.
Step eight, the last one: choose the system restarting and then wait a bit till the Galaxy S Epic D700 boots into the operating system version you wished to see it updated to. And that’s it!

A problem like staring at a “Status 7 error” while performing the guide may put you off. To solve it, you need to do the following before you flash the BeanStalk Build 1.200: install a compatible kernel on your SPH-D700.

To stop worrying about an issue that deals with your D700 getting blocked in booting stage, you have to first operate Wipe cache partition, then Wipe Dalvik cache. Reboot the smartphone after you are done with that. The old ROM can be accessed easily if you want to:
