Update Sony Xperia Z to Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean using CyanogenMod 10.1

Back when Sony released their Xperia Z smartphone, everyone thought it would use Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean. Alas, it didn’t, but the manufacturer said that it would. Soon. Which still hasn’t happened. There’s hope for an end-of-the-month release, but we’ll have to wait and see if that happens.

In the meantime, we are offering a tutorial on how to update your phone to this operating system. All you’ll use will be a tool called CyanogenMod 10.1. So far, only a couple of issues have been reported; they include the device’s cam and its lock screen, which seem to work poorly. But future updates will take care of that, so no worries.

Requirements

Now that we settled this aspect, you should be informed on the requirements that are appropriate for this model: root the phone (don’t forget to install a custom recovery image), make a backup using this guide, turn on USB Debugging, open your laptop and install USB Drivers for this handset on it, charge the battery of the Xperia Z and use a phone with an unlocked bootloader.

Important instructions

1. Here is our updating tutorial. It introduces the following operations for its very first step: download together with GApps Package, from this page on your laptop. Then move them to memory card of the handset and download the to the same laptop.
2. Make sure to unzip the fastboot.zip file into C:.
3. Step three will need you to extract the content of the ROM archive; see if you spot a file called boot.img. If it exists, then you should move it to the Fastboot directory. Now connect the smartphone’s USB cord to it.
4. The fourth step will require you to do the following: hold Volume Up while you connect the handset to the laptop. When the Xperia Z is in fastboot mode, you have to start the command line by going to the Menu > All Programmes > Accessories (on your laptop). Then type
   cs c:Fastboot
   in the command prompt.
5. Step five: enter
   fastboot flash boot boot.img
   This is going to install boot.img and you will next have to unplug the smartphone from your computer. Should you see a “Waiting for device” message, simply type
   fastboot -i 0x0fce flash boot boot.img
   that will install kernel. Wait for a “Finished/OKAY” message.
6. You can now move on to the sixth step: turn the Xperia Z off, then wait for LED lights to come on-screen. Press Volume Up and the smartphone is going to enter Recovery Mode. Now opt for Factory Reset/Wipe Data and confirm.
7. [sc name=”banner-jos”]After the data wiping operation is over, you need to go back to the phone’s Recovery Menu. Opt for Install zip from SD card.
8. Now go to step number eight: select Choose zip from SD card; afterwards you have to opt for the CM10.1 Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean ROM that’s in the handset’s SD card. Confirm its installation, then do the same to flash the Google Apps zip file, too. Go back to the main recovery menu.
9. Step nine will need this from you: choose Reboot system now; the Xperia Z will reboot, then run the CM10.1 custom ROM that delivers the Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean on your smartphone.
