LG Optimus G vs Apple iPhone 5
A new entry in the world of smartphones is the LG Optimus G. We put it next to the iPhone 5 and here is what came of that experiment.
Design-wise, both smartphones have the same great looks. Minus the carbon material used for the LG Optimus G. But both handsets are slim, solid and thin. In terms of weight and measurements, the body of LG’s creation is 145g and 131.9mm x 68.9mm x 8.5mm; the iPhone 5 measures 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm and weighs 112g.
The total amount of RAM on the iPhone 5 is 1GB. Not the same as on the Optimus G, which features 2GB. Storage space on Apple’s handset is 16, 32, and 64 GB. There is no card slot, though. Something that is featured on LG’s phone. Whose storage space is up to 32GB thanks to it. This element is very important on any smartphone these days.
The display
In the battle of displays, both of the smartphones deliver great performance. The touchscreen on the Optimus G is a 4.7″ True HD-IPS+ LCD. Its number of pixels is 768 x 1280. This sort of display comes with 318PPI pixel density. Compared to these values, the display on Apple’s iPhone 5 is a 4″ LED-backlit IPS TFT which packs a resolution made of 640 x 1136 pixels. In this case, pixel desnity is the following: 326PPI. The touchscreens on both smartphones perform admirably. And the fact that they have the same Corning Gorilla Glass technology means extra protection against damage. What the screen on the iPhone 5 compared to the one on its rival is an oleo-phobic coating.
Next we had a look at the devices’ CPUs. Which were both capable of strong performances. For example, the processor offered by the iPhone 5 is a 1GHz dual-core with an A6 chipset. The graphics processor is a PowerVR SGX 543MP3 version. Which has proven to deliver better speeds, among other advantages.

The CPU used by LG on their Optimus G is a 1.5GHz quad-core Qualcomm MDM9615 chipset. The GPU here is the Adreno 320 GPU. These specs are very powerful, both of them in equal measure. Which makes this handset a legit rival to the iPhone 5.
The camera
When we wanted to snap a few photos and shoot some videos, we made good use of the smartphones’ cams. The model that is used by the Optimus G on its back is a 13MP one and it sports the following components and features: 1080P video capture with lighting, LED flash, geo-tagging, image stabilisation and face detection, too. The second camera sits on the front and is a 1.2MP. But the manufacturer still hasn’t confirmed the fact that the Internet is afloat with rumors regarding an 8MP cam for other countries. So we’ll see. But until then, the camera on the iPhone 5 is an 8-megapixel one. Among its many features are simultaneous HD video and still capture, 1080p video capture, LED flash, touch focus, face detection, autofocus and so on. But there is another cam to use: a 1.2MP model. This one is great for FaceTime calls over 3 & 4G.
The battery that is offering life to the Optimus G is a Li-Po 2100 mAh, while the one on the iPhone 5 is a Li-Po 1440 mAh (5.45 Wh).
The operating system
Operating systems are different on both smartphones. While the Optimus G runs comes with the Android 4.0.4, the OS on the iPhone is iOS 6. The version that is on the LG device is totally different than the processor on the previous model, in that it’s vastly better in terms of performance. The user interface is plenty better-looking and easier to use. And the good news is that the company will upgrade this OS to the 4.1 Jelly Bean version soon. Likewise, the iOS 6 operating system is far better compared to what the American manufacturer has created thus far. It features many exciting new additions. Such as VIP mailbox functionality, much anticipated (and needed) updates to Siri, Apple’s own Maps app, Facebook integration and voice controlled turn-by-turn navigation. There are many different apps which can be downloaded via the phones’ app markets.
Apple has done it again. They created a smartphone which has already sold faster than ever. Even if many fans of the company were disappointed in this new model. But fans of LG will love the recent Optimus G. It may not have garnered the same hype as its counterpart, but it’s a total blast.
