HTC Windows Phone 8X vs Samsung Galaxy S3 comparison
Today’s battle of the gadgets is among Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and HTC’s Windows Phone 8X. On this page we are going to compare these two devices and see which one is the winner. Even if in the end it all boils down to what you, our readers, want from a smartphone.
We all know how much success the Galaxy S3 meant for its creator, the South Korean manufacturer Samsung. HTC is a Taiwanese company with plenty of success of its own. The talented team there put their brains together and created the first smartphone powered by the Windows Phone operating system.
External characteristics
When we look at the HTC 8X and the Galaxy S3 it’s easy to notice the difference in measurements and weights. The 8X has a lighter body than the Samsung one: 127g versus 130g. Measurements for the HTC smartphone are these: 132.35mm x 66.2mm x10.12 mm. The Samsung model is 136.6mm x 70.6mm x 8.6mm.
The displays on these two phones are protected against damage by the Corning Gorilla Glass technology. While the touchscreen on the HTC 8X is a 4.3″ Super-LCD2 one, the display on the S3 is a 4.8in HD Super AMOLED capacitive one. The quality of the display on HTC’s latest device resides in the fact that it can be used without problems when the sun is shining; and that’s thanks to its optically laminated glass. Both of the touchscreens share the same number of pixels: 720 x 1280. However, the pixel density on the 8X display is better: 324 ppi. Compare it with Samsung’s value of 306ppi.
The NFC is present on the phones that we are comparing today in equal measure. The only difference resides in the fact that there is no 4G support on the HTC 8X.
The processor and internal storage
The processor that offers life to the 8X is a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core. The Galaxy S3 uses an Exynos 4 quad-core 1.4 GHz CPU. The graphics processor on the S3 is a Mali-400MP. On the other hand, the 8X ships with an Adreno 225 GPU.
Ever since the Windows 8 OS appeared this June, HTC decided to use it on their 8X model. The operating system that Samsung decided to use on the Galaxy S3 is Google’s Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich; the manufacturer said that they will throw an upgrade to the Jelly Bean version next month for consumers in the UK.

In terms of memory, things are the same: there is 1GB of RAM on the 8X and the Galaxy S3 alike. But when it’s time to compare storage space, there is no more similarity. HTC’s newest creation features only 16GB. The S3 offers the following options: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB. While this smartphone boasts a microSD card slot, the 8X lacks it.
The cameras
The cameras that are used for picture taking and other stuff are usually two on any respectable smartphone nowadays. So naturally, both these two devices feature them. The one that sits on the front of the 8X is a 1.2MP one. The one on the back is an 8MP model. Even if the megapixel number is different, the things these cams have in common are the following: the user can shoot 1080p clips and they have a dedicated HTC ImageChip. In comparison, the S3 has a 1.9MP camera and an 8MP secondary one. One of them can record 720 videos at 30fps and the other is complete with the following features: geo-tagging, simultaneous HD video and image recording, face and smile detection and other nice things. The camera that is located on the phone’s front uses a feature that is able to do this: it locks the device if the user has no need for it. The name of the feature is Smart Stay.
Battery-wise, HTC’s 8X sports an 1800mAh one. Compared to it, the battery on Samsung’s Galaxy S3 is a 2100mAh version. Tests showed that both batteries can last a whole day.
The connectivity
Internet connectivity is different. The options that the HTC 8X ships with are these: Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP+EDR, dual-band and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n. There is support for data speeds of the HSUPA and HSDPA variety. The S3 has these options: Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP + EDR, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi hotspot and DLNA support. The data speeds that are supported here are HSUPA 5.76Mbps and HSDPA 21Mbps.
