Update Galaxy S3 GT-I9300 to Android 4.2.2 LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean ROM

As soon as we finish one tutorial, there’s always another one just on the corner. Developers are the persons responsible for offering every owner of almost every gadget ever made the possibility to root or install updates on their own.

That is, if they do what guides tell them to. The device to be thrown into the great mass of phones that have already received updates is Galaxy S3 GT-I9300; which will receive, via this tutorial, a custom ROM baptized Android 4.2.2 LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean.

Requirements

In order to avoid problems arising later on during the guide or at the end of it, consider the following: use the method we picked here only on a rooted phone (which, in turn, needs ClockworkMod Recovery to be installed on it), turn on USB Debugging, download and GApps package available here, allow yourself to charge the battery of this handset, download USB Drivers that work only with this model (and install them on your laptop) and generate a full backup using ClockWorkMod Recovery tool.Galaxy-S3-GT-i9300

Important instructions

  1. If you are already anxious for our tutorial to start, we will no longer prolong the wait and just start with step 1: move the both archives to the root directory that is on the SD card after the phone and the comp are connected to one another. At the end of this transfer you need to remove the S3 GT-I9300 from your laptop.
  2. Power your smartphone off, then select and press the keys labelled Power, Volume and Home, at the same time, let go of them a bit, hold them one more time, then wait as these actions bring the device into ClockworkMod Recovery.
  3. Make a NANDroid backup by doing as follows: opt for Backup and Restore, tap on Backup when a second screen appears and, after the backup ends, return to the recovery menu. While there, click Factory Reset/Wipe Data, select Yes and a full data wipe will happen.
  4. Go back to the ClockWorkMod Recovery menu and tap on Wipe Cache Partition. Now click Wipe Dalvik Cache and opt for Install zip from SD card.
  5. [sc name=”banner-jos”]Click Choose zip from SD card and find LiquidSmooth archive; to choose it, tap Power and then select Yes in order to initiate the installation procedure for the LiquidSmooth Jelly Bean ROM on your Galaxy S3 GT-I9300.
  6. While the installation is underway, you need to wait for it to end. Then go to step 5 and repeat what’s written there; but, instead of the LiquidSmooth file, opt for gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip. After the GApps pack is on your phone, go back to the main recovery menu.
  7. Tap Reboot System Now. So that you can restore the handset to its older ROM, you need to do the following: restart into recovery mode, select Backup&Restore and opt for the previous ROM from a list that will appear.

In the event of something going wrong, do a Wipe Cache Partition and Wipe Dalvik Cache before you go and have the handset reboot.

This custom ROM looks interesting but I want to know how to return to the previous firmware. I am also interested into an official update. Can I flash the new firmware over this one? Is necessary to revoke the installation of the LiquidSmooth custom ROM? Should I use a NANDroid backup to restore the old ROM?
